Cuttl vs Contentsquare (formerly Hotjar)

Both show where visitors get stuck with heatmaps and session replay. Cuttl also runs your A/B tests from the same snippet and plan. Contentsquare sells analytics, surveys and testing as separate products and tiers.

Cuttl and Contentsquare both offer heatmaps, session replay, funnels and frustration signals. The main difference is testing. Cuttl includes A/B, split URL and multivariate tests on its one plan, for unlimited sites. At Contentsquare, A/B testing is an add-on on Pro and included on Enterprise, and Hotjar is now part of Contentsquare.

What happened to Hotjar

Hotjar is now part of Contentsquare. Contentsquare bought Hotjar in 2021 and moved its tools into the Contentsquare platform. You can no longer create a Hotjar account; new users go to Contentsquare’s free plan. If you’re reviewing your plan after the move, this page compares the two tools on the things that usually decide it.

Where Cuttl is different

Find a problem and test the fix in one place

When Cuttl finds a problem, such as rage clicks on a coupon button, it becomes a test idea with the recordings and heatmap attached. One click drafts the A/B test, and each variant gets its own heatmaps and recordings, so you can see why the winner won.

Web Experiments

One plan, every feature, every site

There are no tiers to compare and no separate products for testing or feedback. Agencies and teams with several sites pay for one plan.

Pricing

Answers for sites without much traffic

A/B tests need traffic. When a test would take too long, Cuttl’s pre-test planner says so, and Change Impact compares changed pages against the rest of the site before and after.

How to measure a change without an A/B test

Your AI assistant, with approvals

Cuttl’s MCP server lets Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or VS Code read your heatmaps and recordings and draft tests from real page elements. Nothing goes live until a person approves it.

When Contentsquare is the better choice

  • You want a free plan to start with. Contentsquare’s free plan covers up to 200k sessions a month (with 5% of sessions captured as replays).
  • You need analytics for native iOS or Android apps as well as your website.
  • You need a large integration catalogue. Contentsquare lists 115+ pre-built integrations on Pro and Enterprise.
  • You’re an enterprise that wants product analytics, voice of customer and experience analytics from one vendor under a custom contract.
  • You already use Hotjar inside Contentsquare and don’t run A/B tests. Staying is the least work.

Switching from Hotjar or Contentsquare

  1. 1

  2. 2

  3. 3

Recreate your key funnels and goals in Cuttl. Heatmaps and recordings start filling in from the first visit.

  4. 4

Export any old recordings or survey answers you want to keep, then remove the old snippet.
