Paste the Cuttl Tag into your theme. Heatmaps, recordings and A/B tests then cover your product, collection and cart pages.

Where the Cuttl Tag goes: Online Store, Themes, Edit code, layout/theme.liquid, Just after <head>.

## Add Cuttl to Shopify

1. Sign in to Cuttl, or create a free account. Add your store with the domain shoppers see. If your store has no custom domain, use your own yourstore.myshopify.com address. Open the site’s Install tab and copy the Cuttl Tag. It starts with <!-- Start Cuttl -->.
2. In Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes.
3. Next to your current theme, click ⋯ and choose Duplicate, so you keep a backup.
4. Click ⋯ again and choose Edit code.
5. Open layout/theme.liquid. To find it fast, press Cmd+P or Ctrl+P and type theme.liquid.
6. Paste the Cuttl Tag just after the <head> tag, then click Save.
7. In Cuttl, turn on Journey Insights for heatmaps and recordings, or Web Experiments for A/B tests. Admins can do it on the product’s page or in Settings → Plan & usage. A new workspace starts with both off, and until one is on, Cuttl keeps nothing from your site.

## Check it works

1. Open any page of your live site in a browser.
2. In Cuttl, open the site’s Install tab. It shows when data last arrived, usually within a minute.
3. Nothing yet? View the live page’s source and search for app.cuttl.io to check the Cuttl Tag is there. Then check that the site’s domain in Cuttl matches the address in your browser.

## Good to know

- Shopify doesn’t run theme code on checkout pages, so Cuttl covers your store up to the checkout button. To see how many shoppers start checkout, set a goal on the checkout button.
- After you change or update your theme, check that the Cuttl Tag is still in theme.liquid.
- Don’t add Cuttl as a custom pixel under Customer events. Pixels run in a sandbox that can’t see the page, so heatmaps and recordings don’t work there.
- To leave out your own sessions, open any page of your site once with ?cuttl_ignore=1 at the end of the address.

## Shopify questions

### Do I need a Shopify app?

No. You add the Cuttl Tag to your theme, and there’s no app to install.

### Can I A/B test product pages on Shopify?

Yes. Use the visual editor to change text, images, buttons or layout on product, collection and cart pages, and Cuttl shows which version gets more shoppers to checkout.

### Will it slow my site down?

No. The Cuttl Tag is under 1.7 KB and loads the rest in the background, so it never blocks the page.

### Does it work with any Shopify theme?

Yes. Every Shopify theme has a theme.liquid layout file.

## See where visitors get stuck.

Free for one site. Add the Cuttl Tag, turn on Journey Insights, and your first sessions show up in Cuttl.
